Actually, the Pens never offered Max $2 million. That was Toronto when the Pens were trying to trade his rights, 4 years at $2 mil per year. The Pens offered less than $1 million (a paycut) in exchange for a 3 year deal (since Shero’s standard is usually 2), but Max wanted 4 years. I believe it was the length was said to be the sticking point, but I don’t doubt that money wasn’t also in the back of his mind given the market.
