It wouldn’t surprise me. In the wake of the tragic deaths of Belak, Boogaard, and Rypien … not to mention all the negative attention drawn by last season’s brawl, I’m sure the league wanted to avoid a repeat at all costs.

I had the same thought. Actually, MacIntyre was supposed to play (according to ROOT’s pregame lineup), but Steigerwald mentioned during the opening shift that he and Gillies were (very) late scratches. At the very least it sounds like the teams said, “I’ll sit my tough guy if you sit yours” …

Strange the pens didn’t play Macintyre. I wonder if the NHL had a talk with the two teams before the game.
