Video: Flyers Bear Hug Their Way to Win Over Penguins

All of these clips were within the last 5 minutes of the game or overtime. Not 1 of these were called penalties.   I didn’t have time to get all of the “Hugs” from the rest of the game.

Both Crosby and Malkin had the puck, both refs watching. The Crosby “Hug” was within 10 feet of the referee, you can see the refs feet. Horribly officiated game on national TV, makes the NHL look stupid while NBC tries to showcase the NHL’s #1 star for the second week in a row.

BTW: The NCAA is having it’s best TV ratings in 18 years.

  1. I’d also like to see video of the last rush into the Flyer zone…I was jumping up and down in my living room because it reeeeeeeeeeally looked like whomever had the puck was being bear hugged from behind while entering the zone.
Yet another reason to have a dvr.

  2. That is 5 different plays yes he replayed a couple of them twice but seriously?? They are cheap and can only win against us by cheating period. What about the slash on Malkins wrists that never got called?

  3. Too bad the PP Administrator can’t block comments from uneducated fans. There is no way a season ticket holder would be pro clutching and grabbing! Didn’t Giroux snap his head back when Michalek hit his arm on the bench, resulting in the penalty that started they Flyers comeback?

  4. Jeremy when you said you like the league allowing bear hugs near the boards you lost me. You want clutching and grabbing? You want the league to return to the slow boring play of the 1990’s? All of the bear hugs along the wall 100% takes away from the great play of Crosby and Malkin and reduces them to the likes of an everyday player. Malkin was grabbed from behind and bear hugged while he had the puck and was not able to go to the net or get off a quality shot. This is what you want? You say your a fan of hockey. You have to see soccer, I bet you would love it.

  5. Flyers always get away with acting like that…..nothing new there. Now if it was reversed we would’ve been in the box.

  6. I’m a rabid hockey fan, pens season ticket holder, and die-hard pens fan… and this one just seems like sour grapes to me. yes, they clutched and grabbed a lot near the end fo the game, but picking on a couple of them, showing terrible low-res views of the same couple plays over and over again? that’s just a lazy post.

frankly, I like where the league is going allowing bear-hugs near the boards and whatnot. that’s not what happened here, for sure. BUT, I’ll specifically point to timmonen on sid since I saw it a couple times in that video… which would you rather have? 1) kimo bear-hugs sid AFTER the point of the play in which sid has zero chance of scoring and rides him out of the play. or 2) kimo positions himself for greater leverage (I admit, that’s not easy to do on sid with or without the puck) and then comes up with both arms or a solid shoulder and lays him out?

it wouldn’t require a head hit in that one… timmonen is strong. there’s a reason he played opposite sid or geno all day. he “could” have, completely legally, come down just enough to gain leverage and send sid back on his ass. that “could” have sent sid’s neck snapping back and/or even allowed him to get a bump from the ice. that’s something I’m concerned about myself…

I love sid as much as any other pen’s fan, but like I hated when mario would slash a players ankles or wrists, I hate when someone gets close to sid and he tosses his head back. I really hope that part of his ame is gone for his own sake. I’d hate for him to give himself whiplash (I’m being completely serious here) because of it.

sure, the bear-hugging needs to be policed just as well so that players won’t just claim they were trying to “protect” the other guy. calls won’t be perfect, but it needs to be policed. there were plenty in that game, but let’s try to put some more effort into it next time, huh?

  7. way to make excuses for the penguins loss. fucking fag. flyers won so deal with it. and tell kunitz to not be a cheap ass and actually let hartnell up next time he wants to put his elbow pad in his face

  8. oh, and that malkin spear prob should have been a suspension. Anyway I am not saying that it was one sided… just for the first 2 periods it was only favoring the pens, then they started calling it to favor philly. however philly pens games are always the worst officiated games. Usually its not very biased but when it is it favors the pens by a long shot. like march 27th 2010… worst officiating I ever saw

  10. yeah the officals were bad. I am a flyers fan as well but those refs sucked… hell at the start of the game they missed a highsticking on the pens and then they scored, then there was that thing with letang and hartnell then letang went after rinaldo and somehow it was even even though rinaldo didnt do anything but get hit with hartnells stick… then the big brawl where Kunitz prob should have gotten a few games but he just got a 2 min even with blood shed…

  13. I’m a Flyers fan, I have to say, the officiating yesterday, on both ends, was a complete joke. No rhyme or reason to calls/no calls. How is a “new fan” gonna understand the rules when they are botched by officials on national television?
