As a sidenote, I happened to catch Versus’ telecast of the first Winter Classic on Sunday. As I was watching Sid, I felt this incredible mixture of awe and sadness. Such an extraordinary player. What a tragedy it would for anyone who loves the sport if he isn’t able to come back …

It’s also possible that he may never play the game again. There seems a reluctance to talk about or admit that possibility — publicly, at least — but I will assume those discussions are going on in places where the decisions are made. We will need “the kids,” and more like them. And soon.
