I agree, Phil. While I've been pulling for Thiessen to do well, I'm not sure he has what it takes to be an NHL netminder. Size matters these days for a big-league goalie (that's why so many are 6-4 or 6-5) and the kid looks awfully small in net. If he's 6-0 as listed, then I'll eat my PenguinPoop golf hat--I'd bet he's no more than 5-10, tops. When a goalie's that size he has to compensate with extraordinary positioning and reflexes, which I'm not sure Thiessen possesses.

In fairness to him, the Pens played a really crappy defensive game last night. But a goalie also has to come up with a big save or two during the course of a game, and Thiessen didn't do that. Frankly, he looked overmatched.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if Brent Johnson's the answer, either. I don't know if it's due to age or the "undisclosed injury," but he really struggled to cover the posts this season. If you go back and replay the goals he allowed, I'd bet at least half of them came from the side of the net. He also seemed to have trouble getting his pads down flat along the ice.

One thing is certain. If anything happens to Fleury the Pens are in big trouble ...

I've just spent half an hour reading articles about how the Pittsburgh defense played horrible in Ottawa last night. While they did not have their best game, and Michalek has been out of position for about two months now, let's put the blame where it is best deserved. Brad Thiessen played a horrible game and is not ready for the NHL, and at the age of 26 most likely will never be. He has played four games for the Penguins. The defense played so tight in front of him the first two games that there was barely a quality shot against him. The last two games he has shown that his reflexes are just not fast enough to play at the NHL level.

If he is not sent down today, look for him to be sent down Monday and watch the Penguins fans welcome Brent Johnson with open arms.
