Here’s a glance at how former Penguins are faring around the NHL heading into the New Year. Stats are updated for games played through January 1.

Leading the pack in scoring are Vegas forwards David Perron (30 points) and James Neal (27). Carolina’s Jordan Staal is third with 22 points, one ahead of New Jersey forward Brian Gibbons and Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin.

Neal paces the Penguins’ alum with 17 goals, followed by Gibbons (12) and Staal (10). Washington defenseman Matt Niskanen leads the former Pens with a plus-15, with Gibbons next in line at plus-12.

Among the rearguards, Muzzin tops the list with 21 points, followed by Arizona’s Alex Goligoski (20) and Ron Hainsey (16) of Toronto.

Other notables include Derrick Pouliot (Vancouver) with 11 points and Chris Kunitz (Tampa Bay) with 10. Nashville’s Nick Bonino and Minnesota’s Matt Cullen have eight points apiece. Jaromir Jagr has one goal and seven points in 22 games for Calgary. Trevor Daley has six points, including a pair of goals, for Detroit.

After missing significant time with a concussion, Marc-Andre Fleury (Vegas) leads the expatriate goalies by a wide margin in goals against average (1.96) and save percentage (.938).

  1. Hey Rick,

I still love the ex-Pens list all together!

Better late than never. My things that stand out on this list.

Trevor Daley. He still is somehow playing hockey. Worst +/- on the wings. Thought he was horrible here and he is proving my right.

Sundqvist, same thing. The guy had no heart. He skated and ducked away from every hit. He also never went near the net. 29 games in 3 assists. Great trade by the Pens!

Bonino. Bonino. Bonino. Sheahan is playing better. Bonino’s worst +/- on the team vs Sheahan’s 2nd best on the team. Bonino had the luck to center a line with Kessel when he was here, that’s where his #’s came from. Sheahan has not had any linemates. I’m willing to bet Nashville would trade Bonino for Sheahan right now. I wouldn’t take the trade.

Neal and Perron. Two great regular season players. Both were not protected by their teams, both are out to prove something. Still glad they are not on the Penguins.

Goligoski. Always thought the guy played fantastic defense. He is failing defensively under Tocchet.

  2. Hey Rick,

Once again, thanks for the leg work Rick!

Interesting to see that Pouliot is at least treading water.

    1. You’re welcome, Other Rick.

Hard to believe the Canucks are struggling even worse than we are, given how they cuffed us around. But I guess that’s true of a lot of teams these days… 🙁

Not surprisingly, Pouliot’s numbers have taken a hit along with the team, especially his plus/minus. But the Canucks are sticking with him. He’s averaging 18:44 of ice time a game.

His Corsi (51.3) is reasonably solid…fifth-best on a club that’s struggled to possess the puck. Defensively, he’s blocked 56 shots … the same as Olli Maatta.

      Rick
