Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has suffered a second stroke. Penguins GM Ron Hextall made the announcement early this afternoon.

“Kris reported symptoms to the training staff on Monday and was immediately taken to the hospital for testing,” Hextall said. “The test results were shocking to hear, but we are grateful that Kris is doing well. We are thankful to the medical staff and the physicians at UMPC. He is a warrior on the ice, but first and foremost, he is a son, father, husband and friend. His health is our number one priority.”

According to initial reports, this stroke is milder than the initial one Letang suffered in January 2014. It sidelined the quicksilver defenseman for over two months before he made a triumphant return on April 9 of that year against Detroit.

Since then, Tanger’s skated in 543 regular-season games and 69 postseason contests. He’s the team’s all-time leader among defensemen in games played (962), goals (145), assists (517) and points (662). Superbly conditioned, the Montreal native’s averaged an astounding 24:09 of ice time. Last season was arguably the finest of his 17-year-career, leading to a new six-year, $36.6 million deal to stay in the ‘Burgh.

“I am fortunate to know my body well enough to recognize when something isn’t right,” said Letang. “While it is difficult to navigate this issue publicly, I am hopeful it can raise awareness. It is important for me that my teammates, family and the fans know that I am okay. I am optimistic that I will be back on the ice soon.”

You’re in our thoughts and prayers, Tanger, along with your family, loved ones and teammates. Here’s praying for a complete and speedy recovery.

  1. A second stroke,,,35 years old. Letang also had concussion issues in his career as well. This man is not SUPER MAN as some seem to think. This is serious when taken into complete context of his Hockey career.
I could not care less about # 58, the star defense man for the Penguins or what he means to this team. I am very concerned about Kris Letang the person, husband and the father ! If he goes back on the ice and has a third STROKE or a serious CONCUSSION this man could be paralyzed or even worse.Hockey is not worth your life…He should retire while he still can and forget about Hockey. His life is to important and he needs to think about his family as well.
I wish him well and a speedy recovery, but i do not want to see him seriously injured in the future because we all wanted to win a CUP or should I say HE WANTED TO WIN ANOTHER CUP. Common sense needs to apply here.
I know this will not make me very popular among the faithful Rick, but as you know I too have had several major health issues and the Heart is one of them.I know what my Cardiologist said to me and there is no way he would ever allow me to do anything if I had 2 strokes and had to exert myself as Letang does.
I see this as a blessing and this may just have saved this wonderful man’s life.
He needs to take it easy …..Do not chance another stroke ! You only have one life.
    Cheers JIM

    1. Jim,

If your comments make you unpopular with some, shame on them. Everyone I know that knows Letang say he is truly a class act and if anyone values fleeting, fading attempts for a 4th Cup over this man’s life or another fan’s concern for this man’s life, then those peoples opinions aren’t even worth considering. They are lower than low.
