Vandelay’s Coffee Talk with ex-Penguin Jason Woolley

Jason Woolley had a front row seat to two of the weirder things that went on in the 90′s and sandwiched right in between he spent part of a season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Jason came to Pittsburgh along with Stu Barnes in a trade that sent Chris Wells to the Florida Panthers one year after Jason helped eliminate the Penguins from the playoffs in the year of the “rat”.

A few years after leaving Pittsburgh he was playing for the Buffalo Sabres when Brett Hull scored a Cup clinching goal for Dallas.  A goal that ESPN said is the fifth worst call in sports history.   That year in the playoffs Jason was tied for most overall points by a defenseman and also tied for most points on the entire Buffalo roster.

Jason and I talked about his time with the Penguins, Mellanby’s “Rat Trick”, the Olympics and more.

Art: What was it like playing with Mario Lemieux? What was the locker room atmosphere like? What memories do you have of the Civic Arena?

Vandelay’s Coffee Talk with Phil Pritchard and his Stanley Cup Secrets

I recently caught up with Phil Pritchard and he was telling me what the first thing Sidney Crosby wanted to do with the Stanley Cup on his day with the Cup.  You may know Phil from the credit card commercial where he is stuck in the airport with the Stanley Cup.  You may have seen him polishing the Stanley Cup with his famous white gloves right before they present the Cup to the Stanley Cup Champion, you may have even met Phil in person while he was traveling with the Cup or met him at the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Phil and I talked about salmon fishing with Penguins coach Dan Bylsma,  Phil’s official job at the Hall of Fame, whether or not the real Stanley Cup is on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame,  his white gloves, the commercials he does and of course Sidney and the Stanley Cup.

Coffee Talk with Art Vandelay

Art Vandelay:  Coffee do you drink? What kind?
Phil Pritchard: “I am of English decent and did not grow up in a environment of it. Growing up I always heard how it becomes so addicting. So I have stayed away. I will say that it smells awesome!”

Art Vandelay:  Most people think of you as just being the guy that travels with the cup. Tell our readers what else you do.
Phil Pritchard: “I am also a curator at the Hall. My job consists of looking after all the artifacts, displaying them, collecting hockey history, as well as preserving it.”

Art Vandelay:  Challenges your job presents?
Phil Pritchard: “My work is great. I will say with hockey being played in 65 countries all over the world, it is hard staying on top of hockey history.”

Art Vandelay:  What is the best part of your job?
Phil Pritchard: “Dealing in hockey, and the especially the people. They are so passionate.”

Art Vandelay:  The Penguins won the cup in 09. Are there any stories you can share with us?
Phil Pritchard: “Coach Dan Byslma is a big outdoorsman. Dan and myself went salmon fishing on Lake Michigan with the Stanley Cup and the Prince of Wales trophy. Needless to say we caught 600 pounds of salmon.”  AV- Did Dan let you take some salmon? PP-”Yes!” PP- “A lot do not know this but the first thing Sidney Crosby wanted to do with the cup was READ MORE »

Vandelay’s Coffee Talk with Craig Button

I had the luck of having a phone conversation with NHL on the Fly’s analyst Craig Button yesterday right after the Penguins traded for Alexei Kovalev.   I say luck because this time of year with all the trades going on Craig is an extremely busy person being that he also writes for ESPN Insider and NHL.com.  Craig’s father Jack was the GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins back in the 70′s and Craig himself was GM of the Calgary Flames in the 2000′s.  Craig and I talked about the Alexei Kovalev deal, James Neal coming to Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby, Dan Bylsma being in the running for the Jack Adams trophy and given Craig’s keen fashion sense I got some tips for my upcoming wedding.

Coffee Talk with Art Vandelay

Art Vandelay:  The Pittsburgh Penguins made a deal to re acquire Alex Kovalev from the Ottawa Senators for a seventh round draft choice. What do you make of it?
Craig Button:  I’m not surprised there is no risk but there is the potential for high reward. Alex is the kind of player that thrives with encouragement, and with Dan Bylsma as his coach he will get the encouragement.  Mario Lemieux is added benefit for Dan Bylsma when it comes to Alex since they have played together. I believe Alex will be an energized player for the Penguins.

Art Vandelay: Do you anticipate any more moves between now and the trading deadline for the Penguins?
Craig Button:  Yes. The team needs to understand where READ MORE »

Vandelay’s Coffee talk with Lisa Bowes

I recently caught up with CTV Calgary’s Lisa Bowes.     Lisa Bowes is known through out Canada as the woman who broke barriers by becoming the first woman to do play-by-play for the National Women’s Hockey League, she is also know for the job she did as host/reporter of Women’s Hockey for CTV at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and for covering something not many Canadien’s are proud of, the rioting that took place after the Vancouver Canucks lost in the Stanley Cup finals in 1994.

Lisa and I talked about the sport of Women’s Hockey,  the Vancouver Riots of 1994, the “Skeleton ride” and much more.

Coffee Talk with Art Vandelay

Art Vandelay:  In February 2010 you were CTV’s host reporter for Women’s hockey at the Vancouver Olympic Games. What was the experience like? Is there anything you can tell us about women’s ice hockey that our readers might not know?
Lisa Bowes: “It was a memorable experience because it was my first Olympic Games…  I spent most of it in the mixed zone areas at the UBC and Canada Games Place (GM Place)…so I didn’t see much of the Olympics but met reporters from other countries and was interviewed by TV4 Sweden about READ MORE »

Vandelay’s Coffee Talk with Bernie Nicholls

It’s not often you get to talk to a guy who has scored over 70 goals in one season in the NHL, after all there are only eight that have accomplished that feat.  It is not often you get to talk to a guy who has scored at least 150 points in one season in the NHL, only 5 have done that. Recently I caught up with the great Bernie Nicholls.   Bernie and I talked about his hockey career, McDonalds and a few other things.  I was a bit thrown back when he said Mario Lemieux was a better goal scorer than Wayne Gretzky,  considering Bernie played on a line with Gretzky in LA…

Coffee Talk with Art Vandelay

Art Vandelay:  How is life treating you these days?  What are you up to?
Bernie Nicholls: “I play a lot of golf. I like to hunt, in Canada. Some of the things I like to hunt are moose, and white tail deer.  Anything I get I take to my brother that is a taxidermist.”

Art Vandelay: The Hockey News rated your “Pumper-Nicholl” number 5 on their Top 10 All-time goal celebrations. What are your thoughts on the recognition?  Can you still do the “Pumper Nicholl”?
Bernie Nicholls: “I had no idea about the recognition. I had so much fun playing the game. I always laughing and always had a smile on my face when I played. People who watched me accused me of READ MORE »

Vandelay’s Coffee Talk with Stu Grimson the ‘Grim Reaper’

With all the recent Sidney Crosby concussion talk I thought it would be a good idea to head to Nashville Tennessee and talk with former NHL tough guy Stu Grimson. One of the toughest guys to ever lace them up in the NHL.  Stu ended up retiring a bit early at the age of 36 because of post-concussion syndrome suffered after a bout with of all people ex-Penguin Georges Laraque.  That’s not where his story ends.  If you can believe it, after hockey Stu went on and got a law degree in Memphis and is now a practicing attorney in Nashville.   Stu and I talked about his hockey career, Bob Probert, Sidney Crosby and dealing with concussions, and life after hockey.

Coffee Talk with Art Vandelay

Art Vandelay: You were originally drafted by the Redwings in 1983 but elected not to sign with the team. What happened?
Stu Grimson:  “Yes, Detroit did draft me in 1983.  However, they did not offer me a contract and, therefore, I re-entered the underage draft and was taken in 1985 by the Calgary Flames.  I ultimately turned pro with Calgary.”

Art Vandelay:  You fought some of the toughest guys in the league. Who was the toughest you fought, and what made them so tough?
Stu Grimson:   “Dave Brown, Bob Probert and READ MORE »

Vandelay’s Coffee Talk with Dan Moriarty

Sorry you have not heard from me in a while. Krundle has sent me on a special assignment doing interviews for PenguinPoop. Having never done and interview, I thought I would do my first interview with probably the best NHL interviewer out there,  Dan Moriarty and maybe get some tips along the way.  Dan was the host of several NHL shows like NHL Cool Shoots, Inside the NHL, Pioneers, and Relive the Magic.  He also had his own radio show in LA.  Dan joined me for “Coffee Talk.”  Some of the topics we talked about were:  Sidney Crosby, Max Talbot, playing for the Minnesota Wild, and Jack Bauer.

Coffee Talk with Art Vandelay

Art Vandelay: Dan, in 2007 you sat down with Sidney Crosby and interviewed him for Inside the NHL.  What did you think of him?
Dan Moriarty: “I first met Sidney when he was fifteen years old. We crossed paths when I was working with, Game on Communications.  He was a READ MORE »
