Syl Apps, Mario Lemieux, Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and the Civic Arena

The Civic Arena has given me many great memories, and I will never forget it.  I’ve created a desktop wallpaper to commemorate the different eras that played inside.  This season didn’t go as planned, but it was still another great season of hockey to watch.  I can’t wait for all the new memories at the new arena.

Unlocking Halak

The combination reads 87, 71, and 17,132.  Tomorrow night’s game 7 will be a home game, where the stars need to shine.  No better way to spend 60 minutes than with your heart in your throat, on the edge of your seat, tearing out your hair, and jumping up and down.  The home ice advantage is one I’ve noticed more in this series than in the past.  Not because the Bell Centre is loud, but because they fail to acknowledge momentum swinging hits by Craig Adams, Chris Kunitz, or Brooks Orpik.  That won’t be the case tomorrow.  They can change the pace of the game with one death-defying blow.  And I can’t wait to see it.  That’s where the 17,132 come into play.

Referees Too Involved/Uninvolved with Pens Habs Game 4 Outcome

Usually its up to the players to determine the outcome of a game.  Unfortunately I did not see that as the case during game 4.  I may be hypocritical in calling the Canadiens fans babies, and then turning and saying the referees were terrible in game 4, but I present to you video evidence of a poorly officiated game.  I know that the NHL has seen these highlights, and I think that game 5 will be much better from a refereeing stand point, returning the edge to the Penguins.

My Mother’s a Good Cooking

Similar to my absence on the penguin poop, Malkin has been highly inconsistent during this year’s playoffs.  That will change during game 3 due to some fantastic soup cooking from Mrs. Malkin.  Aside from that, there is atleast one thing I would like to see changed before the pens head into Montreal.  Disco, please stop giving Fedotenko chances to prove he’s not worth his roster spot.  I know he was great in the playoffs last year, but enough is enough.  His penalty in game 2 was as costly as it gets, stealing away all of the pens momentum.  That said, I am actually glad the Penguins lost game 2, because every once in a while, it’s good for a team of this caliber to get a wake up call.  Too many people were overconfident going into this series, and the pens needed to see that if they don’t play their A game, they will not win.

Its Not Just the Players Who are Young

Baby Pens

First of all, thanks to Krundle for bringing me onto the squad.  That out of the way, I’ll begin my first poop (er.. post).

After reading JeanPronovost’s first post, I realized that my knowledge of the Penguins, while vast indeed, does not hold a candle to those who have seen them play since they entered the league in ’67.  However, what  I find truly fantastic about the sports teams in the city of Pittsburgh, is their ability to transcend the ages by winning.  Sure, a Flyers fan can bring up their child to love their team, but they simply haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 1975 (their fight before scoring mentality may be responsible, but that may be enough for their fans.)  For this reason I feel blessed to have grown up in an era where the Pens have seen so much success.  As a young child, my parents brought me up on the Penguins.  During the back-to-back cup years, however, I was simply too young to understand the meaning behind the work it takes to win the cup.  But as I aged, so did the Pens, and soon after we entered the dark ages.  Because I had seen victory at such an early age, and because hockey is such a fast-paced, incredible sport to watch, I did not lose favor with the team as they struggled, still following them on a regular basis.  My devotion was highly rewarded this past spring, when we went into hockeytown, raised the cup high, and then came home to our hockeytown.  For that reason, I believe the Pens have gained much more than just a championship from their cup win last year.  They have gained a newer, stronger, younger fan base.  One that will not waiver in the times to come.  Hockey knowledge is again becoming common knowledge, and fewer and fewer friends are asking questions about offsides.  At an age where I can truly appreciate a Stanley Cup victory, I feel confident that generations to come will feel the same way too.   So I look forward to becoming a writer for this site, hopefully offering insight from a different vantage point, while maintaining a love for the Penguins that so many have felt before me.
