Fleury looked liked he may still have a thick coating of rust on his game in the early stages of this afternoon’s matchup with the Dallas Stars. Fleury, however, seemed to shake off the rust and go on to have a nice game. Hopefully, the rust is all gone as we will need Fleury’s best game as the playoffs draw closer.
The Pens dug themselves an early hole, going down 3-1 early in the second period. As it was the other night, though, our boys just would not be defeated. The Pens reach down deep and scored 5 unanswered goals to go on and defeat the Dallas Stars.
Notes:
Malkin’s scoring streak came to end at 15 games.
- Crosby had two goals to take over the league’s goal scoring race.
- Ponikarovsky scored a power play goal in his Penguin debut. It seems like he might be able to add something to this team.
No time to sit back and enjoy this victory as the boys must get ready for another afternoon match with the Boston Bruins tomorrow. Let’s go Pens!

Wow, have you ever witnessed such a lopsided game that took overtime to decide? The Pens outshot the Rangers 55-16 (That’s right, I said 55), but had to come from behind to win this game in overtime. First, I must give props to Lundqvist. Though he let 5 pucks past, he made 50 saves…..50 saves! Unfortunately, Fleury made just 8 saves on 12 shots. Maybe there is still some rust having not played in a game since before the Olympics. Brent Johnson had a tough night. He had to stop all 4 shots that were fired his way.

Notes:
- Lots of physical play in this game. It was fun to watch.
- Again, the Pens show a strong effort for the entire game. Maybe the Pens are motivated to use the last 20 games to get their “A” game together for the playoff run.
- Malkin extended his scoring streak to 15 games with an assist on the overtime goal by Staal.
Looking forward to Saturday’s game with Ponikarovsky in the lineup.

Wow, it felt good to be back at the old Igloo after the Olympic break. It felt like I hadn’t watched NHL hockey in months. (No knock on the Olympics intended) The good news is the Pens looked pretty good in their first game back. The team really seemed to play consistently for that elusive “60 minutes”. Now, that is not to say they played their “A” game for the whole game, but it was better than what we have been accustomed to in recent history.

The thing that is the most frustrating for me regarding these Pittsburgh Penguins is their inconsistency. We know this team can compete at a very high level. We have witnessed it for the last two and half seasons. Most recently, we watched as the Pens played very well during the first part of this season. Now, we see it on occasion, about every third game.
Their inconsistency can even go on a period-by-period schedule. There have been games where they play two periods of lackluster hockey only to turn it on in the third period. When is the last time that you can say that you saw the Penguins play their best for a full 60 minutes?

First off, I want to say nice work to the boys for the nice victory yesterday afternoon. They played a wonderful game. It could have ended sooner had they capitalized on one or two more of the many chances they had, but a great game nonetheless.
I thought for sure the Penguins would steamroll the momentum from yesterday’s victory into tonight’s game. Unfortunately, they did not necessarily do that. Not until the second period, anyway. The Pens started very sluggishly. This may be the most frustrating thing about the Pittsburgh Penguins. They can play awesome one day and play horribly the next. In the case of tonight’s game, it was a period-by-period change. I understand that they are human, and humans have good days and bad days, but these are highly paid professionals. It just seems to me that there should not be such large swings in the level of play. Enough with that tangent. The boys were able to fight their way through the sluggish play they began the game with, and go on to get the victory.

Back to back wins over the division rival New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers ain’t bad. It is even more impressive when you consider the games were on back-to-back days. They did get a few extra hours due to the 12:30 start yesterday, but still….. The Pens played a pretty darn good defensive game tonight. For much of the game, the Pens prevented the Rangers from having any sustained offensive pressure. Of the two goals that the Rangers scored, one was a nice play coming off of an unfortunate bounce and the other was a fluky goal at best.
The Rangers did get 30 shots on goal, but for the most part the shots were harmless. Fleury did play well in his first game back and first game with the new glove. In the other zone, the Pens controlled the action. It was a combination of the Pens not finishing on a couple of chances they probably should have and Henrik Lundqvist keeping the Rangers in the game. When the action picked up in the third, the Pens took advantage and pulled away for the victory. ...
