Max Talbot simply rocks! Mad Max was overly nice in his comments about Ovechkin – I enjoy the subtle side of great DIGS! Max you are such a SUPERSTAR!!!! IS IT HOCKEY SEASON IN THE BURGH YET!

Alex Ovechkin a “Douche”? I think Talby was being nice on that one. Of course Ovechkin is a jerk. You can tell by the way he cherry picks when he play hockey. Max was just saying what we all thought. Someone on the “Bleacher Report” said, what qualifies Talbot to make those statements. He is a human. I think that is all we need. What does his scoring have to do with whether he can tell if he is a jerk? However, I think Talbot has a cup. Does Ovechkin?

I think the Pens made two great signings today. They solidified our defense for the future with proven players to go along with the people we already have. I would have liked to see them sign a winger, but they are roughly $2M under the cap. We’ll see what happens now, maybe we will trade someone to free up some cap space, but at least our defense is improved.

I hope we dont waste our money on those two either. There are a lot better players being waived and become free agents to wast a million here and there on older players, sorry Billy, but your time is up. Look at what Dallas did to Modano.

This may be true, but a younger player whom we could pay the same as we would Gonchar is a bonus. We have to make a decision on wheather or not we are going to sign Dan or go for Anton. Letting Scuderi go was a mistake and Shero knows it. He was a rock and played for Pitty for years. He was reliable and I’m happy that he finally got credit. To bad its with another team. Still kinda pissed with the Tinordi vs. Beau pick. I would have rather seen Tinordi but im not the boss.

  • By ice girl, June 27, 2010 @ 2:53 pm

Nater, Hamhuis may not be any easier to sign than Gonchar- who is a proven player for us. I hate the thought of his leaving and can’t see any good coming from it. We thought we could easily replace Scuderi and couldnt.

Hamhuis in, Gonchar is out, which actually I hate to say it, its a good move. We now have to sign Dan. I hated the move to take Beau before Tinordi but after Shero shocked me by trading to get Dan, it all makes sense. Well done Ray, well done.

Minor Matters – To follow up on a previous story, the Wheeling Nailers will play 10 regular season and 1 pre season games in Johnstown next season. Appears the Brooks Brothers theory is that 36 home games is too much for a small market fan base to support and they want to experiment with fanning a few out. As for Johnstown, they also had interest from the IHL and the new Federal League but neither will be coming here in the near future but my guess is that if the Federal league (A Class) can establish themselves in their current markets, they may be coming on for 2011-12. After all, we pretty much got used to watching A Class talent here this year anyway…..

This guy is the 2nd coming of Eric Lindros and someone will evenually level his ass just like #11 did and that will determine what he’s made of. Pierre McGuire, Jeremy Roenick and Mike Milbury…. there’s the cream of the crop, LOL.

How sickening wss the fawning over Ovechkin during the Olympic Russia/Czech game when Malkin was the true go-to guy? Malkin had 2 goals and an assist but all you heard about was Ovechkin and at the end of the game, the camera stayed continously focused on Ovechkin-s face. Seriously? Only thing more disgusting was the ‘which player would you take – Ovechkin or Sidney?’ – with Mike Milbury the king of hating the Penguins being one of the commentators. What a surprise he wanted Ovechkin. I’ll take Sid and Malkin over Ovechkin any day — if for no other reasons than they are both humble, decent, hard-working hockey players who aren’t glitz-mongers. Here’s a new cheer for the next Russian game — HATE 8!!! HATE 8!!

You don’t read much about this but Sykora’s stock went down the toilet when DISCO DAN came on board. We still don’t have a 2nd line RW and Sykora wasn’t even on Shero’s radar. Still— the guy had 10 GWG’s yet he (along w/Satan) disappeared for weeksat a time and he (along w/Satan) disappeared when the going got rough. I figure him for a max of 35 points this year without playing on a line and PP with Malkin and Crosby. I won’t miss either Satan or Sykora—- and don’t expect the Penguins will either.

FACTOID – Since the last expansion the Pens, Devils and Wings have dominated winning 10 Stanley Cups. Wings have 4 Cups and the Penguins and Devils have 3. During this period three of the Original Six teams Boston, Chicago, and Toronto don’t have any. The Rangers win one every 40 or so years and are due for their next one in 2038! It’s no wonder this is a hockeytahn. Winning those Cups for the Original-6 need an asterisk beside them. Not only were there only six-teams but the series were short. Then there was Montreal and Toronto who had sole rights to French Quebec and Ontario players which was also an unfair advantage. Winning the Stanley Cup in today’s age is a major feat – probably the most demanding of any sport anywhere.

Winning face-offs is important but it isn’t from a skater who lacks foot speed—- and Zigomanis lacks foot speed. He’s pathetically slow and that’s why he might be signed to play in Wilkes Barre and was able to play in Junior but this guy’s lack of speed seriously which negates his overall value at the NHL level. I don’t get this cult-like following he gets here—- it’s almost reminiscent of Pittsburgh unexplainable fascination with backup QB’s. Hopefully if he is signed it’s a two-way where most of his time is spent one-way.

Janne Pesonen has signed to play in the KHL next year. There goes the Crosby/Malkin experiment! It’s always interesting to see some players doing well in the AHL as Pesonen appeared to play well with the Baby Pens. He does get to play with ex-Pen Alexsey Morozov who won the Sputnik Trophy in the KHL. You have to believe that others (besides Therrien and Blysma) felt he wouldn’t cut it here as no other NHL team signed him. Can’t blame the Pens for trying, however.

Don’t be surprised if we lose scuds. The signing of rupp (more of an enforcer than a goal scorer) makes me believe even more that we will go after Fedotenko because we will need a goal scoring presence out there alongside him.

Rumor has it there might be a trade between the Penguins and Flames, possibly involving Dupruis. Also another rumor is that 4 to 5 teams are interested in Scuderi. He camp will be contacting Pittsburgh before he ddecides, however they believe that the money offered from other teams might be too much.

    Some FA DAY predictions:
    * Both Fedotenko and Hossa sign with the Minnesota Wild
    * Scuderi signs with Toronto
    * Toronto does the deal – Karerle for Kessel and a few draft picks exchange hands
    * Penguins sign Ty Conklin (why not) he’s proven and won’t break the bank
    * The Capitals give Nylander away to Rangers literally for a bag of pucks
    * Dany Heatly waives NT but only to Detroit. Wants to win a Cup.
    * Penguins re-sign Hall Gill but not until next Monday
    * Pens sign Pesonen to 2-year contract
    * Pens in the bidding for Todd Bertuzzi

These Pens/exPens made the US Olympic tryout squad: Brooks Orpik, Rob Scuderi, Ryan Whitney, and Ryan Malone. You can say goodbye to Rob Scuderi because of this, he will now go to free agency and get more money. What idiots at the US camp decided today would be a good day to put out the roster?

The Pens only have a little over 5 million left in the bank and the still need some defense and a goaltender. If they go after a big name, Kunitz or Gonchar would most likely need to be traded.

Adams actually signed for less 550 for 2 years Made 600 in 09. I believe they will be able to retain Guerin and Fedetenko. I just don’t see how they can keep Scuderi. He will probably go in the high 3 million range possibly long term. Some team will offer something like 14 to 15 mil over 4 years. No way the Pens can(or should) match it.

Walking into the Igloo from the West Parking lot and seeing the fans with sofas, chairs and whooping it up like the game was already in progress is unreal. Washington Place had to be blocked off and yet NBC isn’t going to allow the games to be shown on the big screen outside the Igloo. This is why as soon as the NHL gets away from the big-3 networks before they TANK like GMC would be a good move. The Extreme Sports & Poker Network is now hockey history and Versus is turning into a pretty decent channel. It’s funny that WIIC hasn’t protested this to any major degree. I guess they know their place. Like Hossa does! There isn’t much of a choice right now but there sure is down the road with NBC and WIIC. Penguin fans don’t forget and these 6 to 8 thousand outside are a new generation of viewers. Where do you think WIIC – Channel 11 is on their list now! How stupid some marketing tactics are.

Maybe it’s just me, and my lack of short term memory, but I just don’t seem to remember Paul Maurice having nearly as much to say about his own Scott Walker sucker punching Aaron Ward as he has had to say about Cooke’s knee to knee hit on Eric Cole. Since I staunchly believed that OVi-Rated should have been suspended for his hit on Gonchar, I have to say the same thing about Cooke’s shot on Cole. Maurice, on the other hand, should just shut his pie hole after he would not lambaste his own player for an even worse cheap shot.

When you see arena’s with piped in noise or like in Washington’s phone booth where some ‘old goat’ blows a horn thru-out the entire game – that’s pretty annoying. A LET’S GO PEN’S starting slowly in whatever section and speading around the entire Igloo is something special.
Personally, some of these teams think the noise created by their fans actually contribute a major factor in determining who wins the game. Philadelphia fans believe that and therefore spend a good portion of the game yelling Crosby Sucks – while Sid the Kid is burying them. Same as in Washington.
IMHO a lot of the ‘noice fans’ couldn’t get the student rush tickets and are sitting outside.

I think says that the Penguin’s fans are intelligent hockey fans. The Pens should get rid of these idiotic fake sound meter things, leave them for the teams that have amateur fans. They used to think that the Steeler fans only supported the defense until other teams started to catch on that the fans were being quiet so the quarterback could call his signals. After we got the lead yesterday, we lulled Carolina asleep.

Or are a lot of tickets being sold to play-off only fans. The media also commented on the crowd noise during the Washington Series. However, we do have a rivalry there. I watched a few Carolina games and their crowd really gets into it. Hopefully as the series go on, the crowd will be more into it. Disappointing for a town that love its hockey.

Excuses are for losers… I don’t think Boudreau should have even mentioned it, even if it’s all 100% true… The CAPS had a choice to play dinged up players, or recall healthy players… They did what they did and have to live with that, but offering up excuses – Well, I don’t like that… The Pens dominated the series… The CAPS played hard and with passion, and Varlamov was huge for most of the series, but the Pens owned the CAPS… Stats don’t lie, and while they don’t paint a complete picture, they can be very telling… The Pens totally deserve to be moving on, and CAPS injuries had nothing to do with it IMHO… Thanks for throwing that bone my way, but I cannot accept it… Pens were just too damn good, and I cannot see it any other way or fall back on any excuse…

It seems the Capitals program is coming around, the ovation that the fans gave at the end of the game was truly that of which hockey fans do. I’m hoping for Washington that they go more that route than towards the dark side (Philly).

I am going to throw an excuse out there for you. I believe Mike Green’s rib injury was a bit more than they have been telling, maybe similar to the problems Sykora is having, a guy like that just doesn’t stop shooting.

Simyon Varlamov (he’s changing his name from Simeon) played great and I was amazed he didn’t crack under the stress before that. That has to be a bit nerve racking to come into this kind of series.

Our (HOOK-Gypsy) contest is pretty interesting from this standpoint. Our experts who (combined) have
32 series selected and of those 32 selections 31 are at 6 or 7 games so no matter who they selected they are still in the running. Could be they are more experienced at this than we are. We’ll see. Everyone of us ‘regulars’ have at least one series we won’t get ‘on the nose’, a few with two, and Kutdacheez has three of the four series he won’t pick ‘on the nose’… yet he did go out on the limb rather than playing the consensus.

The CAPS are playing over their heads right now, which is fantastic for the CAPS and their fans, but we are realistic enough to know that the Pens just didn’t play up their capabilities in the first two games… This series, IMHO, is going to be a hard fought battle that will likely go to 6 or 7 games… The Pens are the better team, but the CAPS are going to make them earn it if they want it… It shouldn’t be any other way…

Bylsma makes first mistake. I’m not going to say I wasn’t one pushing to supplant sykora with satan, but the way that it was done made the whole team way way worse. If Bylsma had simply put Satan on the 2nd line, I would have liked to see what happened. But putting Dupuis on the 2nd line, with Satan on the 4th, just made both lines worse. Satan had a couple of shots on goal, but I think he would have been better suited for 2nd line duties. Anyone should be able to play with Malkin, lets not give up our 4th line superiority like that. I’d rather Sykora have stayed if those lines were our only option. Oh well, the pens are way overdue to win a matinee game, and show the world how fair weather the Flyers fans really are.

    By GotMalkin, April 21, 2009 @ 11:09 am

Just wanted to throw out some more Flyers quotes. These guys crack me up.

    1st excerpt from espn.com:

One of those moments that has become a kind of defining moment in this series came early in Game 3 as Chris Kunitz, the human torpedo, bowled over Timonen at the side of the Flyers’ net.

No penalty was called, and Timonen, who has been hit more than a dozen times since the series started, went on to play more minutes in Game 3 than any other skater. But the hit has become a lightning rod for debate in this battle for physical supremacy in the series.

“You’re not just trying to get the puck back there, you’re trying to hurt him,” Philadelphia coach John Stevens said. “That’s playoff hockey, so emotion runs high.”

Stevens, you are a joke. This is the same guy that put Carcillo out on a 5 on 3 with 30 seconds left down three goals, saying we are trying intentionally injure his player with a clean check. An interesting perspective from a head coach.

    2nd excerpt from espn.com

“It’s a game of hitting, hitting our skill,” Hartnell said. “We want to hit their skill, take their time and space away. It’s part of the game. It’s not rocket science. Every bump you give Malkin and [Sidney] Crosby, hopefully, it wears them down over the series. But you don’t want to go cross that line and take someone out.”

Hartnell, you are a liar liar hair’s on fire. Special thanks to espn for clearing up that he was talking about ‘Sidney’ Crosby.

    3rd excerpt from espn.com:

“That’s kind of maybe our strategy for Gonchar and Crosby and Malkin. Every chance I get, I’m trying to hit Malkin and Crosby and taking runs at Gonchar, too,” Flyers captain Mike Richards said. “I’m sure they’re not too thrilled about that, but it’s playoff hockey. That’s what you try to do; you get them off their game.”

Richards seems to contradict his coaches comments here, appearing to be the team’s most open player about being a goon. I don’t think I’ve seen to many quotes where a guy suggests they will be “taking runs” at players.

All in all I got a great morning chuckle from these classic quotes. I’d throw some Pens quotes up, but they all seem to say the same thing, “We played bad, we’re going to play between the whistles, we’ll play better and smarter.”

    Go Pen!

    excerpt from espn.com:

Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen questioned if the officials are treating his team the same as the Penguins.

“What I noticed was, I didn’t see the refs yelling at their bench at all. Not one time,” Timonen said. “I could see them coming over to our bench a few times. It makes you always wonder why.”

Timonen said the Flyers deserved the same respect from the refs as he feels they gave Pittsburgh.

“You see these guys going to the refs and talking to them, and it looks like (the refs) talk to them back,” Timonen said. “We go talk to them and they yell at us. It’s a little bit of a difference. It’s not something we can control.”

Hahaha, way to man up and take the responsibility you should for this loss Mr. Timonen. It sounds to me like the Penguins and the referees wouldn’t let Kimmo play on the monkey bars at recess or something. I particularly like the part where he says the refs yell at them. Well maybe after Hartnell had to sit in “time out” so many time during game one, the referees just assumed you were all thugs with no regard for how hockey should be played. I can only wonder if when Kimmo watches the tape from last night, if he agrees with the cross-checking, stick breaking clear-cut penalties his team foolishly took in OT to cost them the game. Or while those parts are playing, if he’s whispering to Knuble about how mean the linesman had been for calling that icing on him. In a borderline politically incorrect final comment, I would like to suggest that Kimmo is the cause of cancer, rather than the cure.
