Penguins Lose To Capitals

The goal scoring race is on

I cannot look at losing all of our games against New Jersey and Washington as anything but a negative.  I know Crosby and some others have downplayed the importance of not being swept by an inevitable playoff opponent, but I don’t see it.  I feel that it does not bode well for a playoff matchup. Now, I have heard countless people say that they are not worried because the Pens will “step up” their game in the playoffs.  Don’t you think that the Capitals will also “step up” their game?  New Jersey….maybe not so much because they play such a defensive game to begin with.  I would have felt better if the Pens could have pulled tonight’s game out.

I have to say that after watching the game tonight, I have determined the Pens shooting is horrible.  For quite a while now, people have been complaining about Kris Letang missing the net.  (Which, of course, he deserves)  The problem is not limited to him.  Also, it is not just missing the net.  It involves passing up shooting opportunities or even shooting the puck right into the goaltender.  Tonight, Goligoski passed up more good shooting chances than I care to remember.  Tyler Kennedy has been a focus of mine regarding this issue all season.  It still holds true.  He is a nice player.  He could be a really good player if he could finish.  It just seems that there is a lot of room for improvement in the overall team shooting.

Notes:

  • Fleury with not 1, but 2 softies tonight.  I am hoping he can get that worked out in like a week.
  • What was up with Semin acting like he got shot in the head on Talbot’s hit on him?  I saw the replay, and I could not see anything that would cause him to go down for the count.  Have I mentioned that I dislike him as much as any player in the league.  He is such a baby, and this clip is embarrassing to men and to hockey alike:

  • So Crosby scored one goal and Ovechkin scored two goals to tie up the goal-scoring race.  One of Ovechkin’s goals was an empty netter.  For those of you wondering: Crosby has just one empty net goal vs. Ovechkin’s 5.

Looking forward to the last game in the Igloo on Thursday night.  It should be quite a night.

Are the Capitals That Much Better Than Everyone Else?

I want to give the Capitals their due as they are a very good hockey team.  They have so much talent all through their line-up.  The only weakness that anyone might find is the goaltending, but Theodore has been playing well lately — maybe that problem is solved.

Are they really 17 points better than anyone else in the East?  I decided to look a little deeper into their record and this is what I discovered.  The Southeast Division that they play in is by far the worst in the Eastern Conference.  READ MORE »

Pens Bounce Back to Beat Atlanta in Overtime

Maybe the closed door meeting held by the players after the horrible performance against the Lightning helped, or maybe it was something else.  The Pens played a better game today against the Thrashers.  The win was made a bit better when considering that Atlanta is a team scrapping for a playoff berth and that former Penguin goalie Johan Hedberg played a very good game….mostly.

Johan Hedberg is beaten by Malkin in the second period.

Penguins’ Warts Continue to Surface

If anyone believes that the Penguins were out-worked Wednesday night by the Lightining, think again.  The Lightning did NOT have to work to win that game.  They just had to show up.  The next time that the Penguins decide ‘as a group’ to go through the motions for 6O minutes, I would prefer if one of them would call me so that I too can find something else to do that night rather than make the 100 mile round trip to watch paint dry.  I understand that it is hard to be on top of your game every night, but there has to be at least a little bit of compete-level in any game.  Wednesday there was no compete-level by any player.  Every Penguin should donate 1/82nd of his salary to his favorite charity.  Mike Smith picked up his second shutout of the season without breaking a sweat.

I don’t know exactly what was said in the closed door meeting.  It couldn’t have been anything that the players didn’t already know.  It had to be something like — “We only have five games left and are battling for a division title, so we should be playing harder.”  If they weren’t already aware of that, something is seriously wrong.

Once again, one of their biggest warts surfaced.  READ MORE »

Will the Penguins be Ready for the Playoffs?

In February of last year we had a very talented, under-achieving tenth place hockey team.  A team that had been to the Stanley Cup Finals the previous season.  An 18-3-4 finish to the regular season catapulted them to fourth in the East and gave them the confidence that they could beat any team in any fashion.  Right now we have a hockey team in second place in the East – a team that has picked up points in 11 of their last 14 games, and all we hear is – “What’s wrong with the Penguins?”

Yes, there have been certain weaknesses in their game for a lot of the season.  This will not matter once the post-season begins.  The immediate goal is to finish strong over these last six games,  continue to work on the areas that have created some problems over the course of the season, and develop that sense of invincibility that is needed to perform at the highest level.  There are two areas of concern that I believe the Penguins must fix over the next six games.  READ MORE »

Goligoski is doing everything Whitney couldn’t

When Alex Goligoski takes the ice tonight at 10pm you will be seeing the guy that made it easy for the Penguins to trade away Ryan Whitney.  Goligoski in two short seasons has become the breakout playmaker that the Penguins were expecting Ryan Whitney to be with one little added bonus, Goligoski leads the entire NHL (not just defensemen) in plus minus.  For a guy who is supposed to be an offensive defenseman that is quite impressive.

pp0138

                   GP   G    A    PT     +/-
Goligoski     14    5    7    12    +12
Whitney      12    1    6    07    +03

Both defensemen have great skill, but confidence is the one thing that separates the two. Goligoski is not afraid to skate the puck all the way up the ice and shoot while Whitney is more apt to dish the puck off and have someone else work it. If you remember, Whitney’s best year was the year he was partnered with Gonchar at the point on the powerplay. He had 14 goals, 45 assists and was a one trick pony – get the puck to Gonchar, you can rack up a lot of point that way.

In the last two seasons, Goligoski has played 59 games, has 32 points and is a plus 17.   Whitney has played 60 games, has 30 points and is a minus 11.
