I remember smiling the day I learned that former GM Ray Shero had signed ex-Penguin Rob Scuderi to a free-agent deal back in the summer of 2013. Broadly.
What wasn’t to like? “Scuds” had served as the defensive anchor on another Cup winner—this time in Los Angeles—while mentoring talented young Drew Doughty. I figured Shero had found the per [...]
It’s hard to say whether the Penguins have what it takes to win the Stanley Cup. Conventional wisdom says GM Ray Shero has some holes to fill—especially on the third line. While the team’s championship pedigree may be in question, its heart and soul are not.
The Penguins displayed plenty of both against a surprisingly spirited Buffalo squad a [...]
As I watched the Penguins take one on the chin last night at the hands of the Dallas Stars, I couldn’t help but note that for the second time in the past four games the black and gold got lit up by a younger, faster, hungrier team.
It made me wistful for the time when injuries forced the Penguins to dress some of their kids. Remember how it f [...]
Perform a quick scan of Pittsburgh Penguins statistics and you’ll notice a surprising number. Perched atop the list in plus/minus rating is Matt Niskanen. The same Matt Niskanen who most experts felt would be dealt over the past summer to clear salary cap space.
If ever there was a player who epitomized the mantra of the late comedian Rodney [...]
With all due respect to Jarome Iginla, Jussi Jokinen, and Douglas Murray, my favorite Penguins acquisition at the 2013 trade deadline was Brenden Morrow.
Call me old school, but ever since “Scary” Gary Roberts left the ‘Burgh during the summer of 2008 I’ve felt the Pens have lacked a certain element. Call it “functional snarl,” if you will. I [...]
Say this about Penguins GM Ray Shero. He sure doesn’t wait for an invitation to join the party.
In a pair of bold moves that preempted the NHL’s April 3 trade deadline by over a week, Shero acquired two missing pieces to the Pens’ Stanley Cup puzzle. On Sunday he swapped defensive prospect Joe Morrow and a 5th round pick in the 2013 Entry Dra [...]
The Penguins have traded promising defensive prospect and 2011 first round draft pick Joe Morrow to the Dallas Stars in return for veteran captain of the Stars Brenden Morrow. The trade reads as this: Pittsburgh gets Brenden Morrow and Dallas’ 3rd-round pick in 2013 for prospect Joe Morrow and Penguins 5th-round pick 2013.
To make r [...]
Throughout Dan Bylsma’s tenure as coach the Penguins have displayed unflinching character in the face of overwhelming adversity. As so it was Wednesday night before a packed house at the in American Airlines Center in Dallas. After losing top point men Kris Letang and Steve Sullivan to injuries, the Pens responded with a gutsy, courageous eff [...]
Fleury looked liked he may still have a thick coating of rust on his game in the early stages of this afternoon’s matchup with the Dallas Stars. Fleury, however, seemed to shake off the rust and go on to have a nice game. Hopefully, the rust is all gone as we will need Fleury’s best game as the playoffs draw closer.
The Pens dug [...]
