Malkin Gets 50, Penguins Dump Flyers 4-2

For a game that was meaningless in terms of its impact on the standings, Saturday afternoon’s contest between the Penguins and Flyers sure caused a stir. In the wake of last weekend’s brawl-marred Philly victory, neither team was letting its guard down. This would explain why the Pens summoned heavyweight Steve MacIntyre from their Wilkes-Barre farm club.

While the hulking 6’6”, 250-pounder provided a reassuring presence, the black-and-gold’s big guns did the heavy lifting. Paced by two-point performances from Sidney Crosby, Chris Kunitz, Jordan Staal, and MVP candidate Evgeni Malkin, the locals bounced the Flyers 4-2 in a preview of their opening-round playoff series.

Anticipating fireworks, Pens coach Dan Bylsma ushered MacIntyre onto the ice at the earliest opportunity. Two minutes in “Big Mac” and Flyers enforcer Jody Shelley had ringside seats as Joe Vitale lit up Philly’s Harry Zolnierczyk in a brisk middleweight tilt.

With the hostilities out of the way, the bitter rivals concentrated on hockey. In a typical display of passion Arron Asham made a diving pass out of the corner to Pascal (Super) Dupuis. Catching Philly flat-footed, the hustling winger ripped his 25th goal past Sergei Bobrovsky to extend his NHL-best points streak to 17 games.

Flyers Rally, Smoke Sputtering Penguins 6-4

In all likelihood the Penguins and the Flyers will clash in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs during the very near future. If Sunday’s matinee contest at CONSOL Energy Center was a preview, the Pens could be in big trouble. After striking for two quick goals, the home team crumbled like the dome on the old Civic Arena en route to a frustrating 6-4 defeat at the hands of their cross-state rivals.

With the memory of a bitter last-second overtime loss to the Flyers on March 18 still burning in their collective conscience, the Penguins ripped into their foes from the opening draw. After weathering an early Philly thrust, Steve Sullivan chipped a one-timer off a Flyers defender and past Sergei Bobrovsky at 1:14.

Near the five-minute mark the amped-up Pens widened their lead to 2-0, thanks to crisp passing play by the “Firing Line.” Chris Kunitz fed Evgeni Malkin, who quickly moved the puck to a wide-open James Neal below the right circle. The big winger rifled a shot past Bobrovsky to the stick side for his 39th goal of the season.

Realizing his club was in dire straits, Philly coach Peter Laviolette called a time out to settle his troops. The move worked like charm. While the locals frittered away their early momentum with drop passes and fancy east-to-west plays, the visitors went to work. Following a glaring turnover by Matt Cooke, Claude Giroux cashed in from the high slot at 15:09. Ex-Pen Max Talbot provided another spark for the orange and black when he challenged Neal at the buzzer.

Penguins Doin’ Fine without Jagr

As our Penguins prepare to battle archenemy (and likely first-round playoff opponent) Philadelphia on Sunday, I thought it might be a good time to reflect on the Flyers’ signing of free agent Jaromir Jagr last summer. Kind of a hockey version of Back to the Future, if you will.

Just to refresh your memory, the former Steel City great decided to return to the NHL following a three-year hiatus in the KHL. After expressing through his agent Petr Svoboda that “his heart was in Pittsburgh,” Jagr spoke with Pens owner Mario Lemieux on June 23. Encouraged by the conversation, Mario gave GM Ray Shero the green light to extend the expatriate winger a one-year offer for $2 million.

“We feel he’s a guy who could help us this year and retire as a Penguin,” Shero said.

Much to the surprise of his former team, Jagr opted to test the free-agent waters. On July 1 he signed with Philly for a cool $3.3 million. Predictably, his decision to join the hated Flyers touched off a fresh wave of venom in the city where he once was king.

“Jagr did the Penguins a favor by picking the Flyers,” Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Ron Cook wrote. “They are better off without him.”

Penguins Cooke Crumbles Flyers 6-4

Once upon a time the Penguins used to come down with a strange malaise called the “Philly Flu” whenever they traveled cross state to take on Philadelphia. While the Flyers remain one of the NHL’s elite teams, visiting the “City of Brotherly Shove” no longer evokes the same stomach-churning symptoms it once did.

Take Saturday afternoon’s matchup at the Wells Fargo Center, for example. After falling behind their Atlantic Division brethren, 2-1, the Pens came roaring back on the wings of shorthanded tallies by Jordan Staal and Matt Cooke to a snatch wild 6-4 victory.

Jagr, Talbot Silence Penguins 4-2

Through the years Pittsburgh fans have become accustomed to watching Jaromir Jagr score big goals. So it was nothing new, really, to see No. 68 find an open patch of ice and whip his patented backhander past an opposing goalie. Trouble is, the one-time Penguins’ great accomplished the feat Thursday night at the CONSOL Energy Center while wearing an orange-and-black jersey.

In his much ballyhooed return to the ‘Burgh after snubbing a contact offer from his former team, the legendary Czech notched a key second-period goal to pace Philadelphia to an impressive 4-2 victory over the Penguins.

“We made a lot of sloppy plays,” said Pens winger Tyler Kennedy, who notched a goal and an assist in a losing cause. “If you want to be a great team, you’ve got to be better than that.”

The atmosphere at the CONSOL fairly crackled with electricity as the sellout crowd eagerly awaited the opening faceoff. Predictably, Jagr was greeted by a deafening chorus of boos when he emerged from the visitor’s runway.

I Will be Standing Up Cheering Jaromir Jagr Tonight

What if we tried to make Pittsburgh not look stupid & petty tonight for the HBO 24/7 camera’s and national TV?  Lemieux once got a standing ovation in Philadelphia when he showed up.

Today all I see and hear is reporters all over the radio, news print and social media telling me about how I should boo Jaromir Jagr tonight.  I will not.  Here is the truth…  Jaromir Jagr was dying alive in Pittsburgh.  Pittsburgh was trading every player around Jagr who made more than league minimum and was keeping Jagr around to sell tickets.

I’ve always been one that gets confused about how Heroes and Villains work in the Pittsburgh sports world.  Jaromir Jagr didn’t say a word when the team was READ MORE »
