After absorbing a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of nettlesome New Jersey on Thursday night, the Penguins desperately needed a bounce-back effort against the Red Wings yesterday afternoon.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are on a roll. Winners of five straight, including Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing of those notorious bullies from Broad Street—the Philadelphia Flyers—in the latest installment of the Battle of Pennsylvania. One that enabled the black and gold to leapfrog the Islanders and claim third place in the Metropolitan Division.
There must’ve been times early in his tenure as Penguins coach when Mike Sullivan wondered what he’d gotten himself into. Especially after watching his new charges fold up like a cheap suit during a dismal 6-2 loss to Boston on home ice a week before Christmas.

It’s a no-brainer, right? If you want to be a puck-possession team, you need defensemen who can move the puck.
On that count our Penguins get high marks. Kris Letang, Christian Ehrhoff, Paul Martin, and Simon Despres handle the puck with equal parts ability and aplomb. As do Olli Maatta (shoulder surgery) and hot prospect Derrick Pouliot.
