NHL Winter Classic: Capitals vs Penguins at Heinz Field January 1st 2011

Finally the NHL will be showcasing their superstars, after all the hype Sidney Crosby & Alexander Ovechkin got at the Winter Olympics, it would seem that the NHL has come to it’s senses and will be having them go head to head in the NHL’s showcase event, the Winter Classic .

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the Washington Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins, January 1, 2011 at Heinz Field, the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers is almost a done deal though it won’t be announced until mid summer.  Both the NHL and the Pittsburgh Penguins have yet to confirm it, probably so they can have the big media event when announcing it.   Ticket prices probably will be $100 to $500 and even though it takes place in Pittsburgh, the Washington Capitals will be considered the home team.

You can read more about it here:

Gameday Poop: Penguins vs NJ Devils – Evgeni Malkin is out

The Pittsburgh Penguins have lost to the New Jersey Devils all five times they played them this year. Three out of the five losses came when the Penguins played them on the second night of back to back games and the Devils did not play the night before. Two of those games the Penguins traveled immediately after their game the night before while New Jersey rested. It makes it a little harder to play against a trap like New Jersey’s when your that tired. The other two losses came earlier in the season when the Penguins were injury ridden.

Just when the Penguins were about to have an injury ridden free roster for probably the first time this year with Eric Godard coming back,  Evgeni Malkin goes and gets a bruised foot and will be sitting this one out tonight after skipping this morning’s practice. Malkin did skate a little this morning before practice and is listed as day to day.

The Penguin’s web site reported that this is the way the offensive lines practiced this morning:

Ponikarovsky-Crosby-Dupuis
Kunitz-Staal-Guerin
Cooke-Kennedy-Fedotenko
Rupp-Talbot-Adams

Of course with the way coach Bylsma mixes up lines, I don’t expect to see these lines past the first period.

In honor of St. Patty’s day, the New Jersey Devils will be wearing their St. Patrick’s Day retro green uniforms tonight. Martin Brodeur was the only Devil currently on their roster when they wore green and he’ll even be sporting a retro goalie mask, but not his old blue glove and blocker.

New Jersey Devil’s Martin Skoula who was a Pittsburgh Penguin defenseman 2 weeks ago does more in half a month than most do in a whole month. He was traded to Toronto then to New Jersey and had a baby son on Saturday, there is still 1/2 of March left.

OK. I promised myself that I would not say anything about the 2 year old 0vechkins boarding of Blackhawk’s Brian Campbell, but I just can’t help myself. I truly believe that 0vechkin thinks it is alright to READ MORE »

Gameday Poop: Pittsburgh Penguins vs Nashville Predators – February 14

Thanks to the Olympics this afternoon’s Valentine matinee 1PM game against the Nashville Predators is the last Penguin game until March. That being said the Pens should leave it all on the table as they try to take down a Predator team that is barely hanging onto a playoff spot in the western conference. Unfortunately I believe that the penguin players who will be boarding a plane immediately after the game headed to the Olympics will be playing safer than usual.

pp0169I know there are a bunch of fans that do not like Pittburgh players and other NHL players going to the Olympics because of the possibility of them getting hurt, I am not one of them. While hockey for the last month has been interesting with players pulling their punches against their soon to be Olympic teammates, it to me is well worth it for the quality of hockey I will get to see in the next two weeks.

The Penguins have been releasing Olympic pictures for you computer desktop, I haven’t seen the USA Orpik one yet, but the Canada and Russia ones are kind of scary, especially Fleury’s. I’ve never seen him look anything near that cleaned up before. You can get them here: Penguin Olympic Wallpapers

BTW: Martin Brodeur, one of the Canadian goaltenders that Fleury is competing with got pulled again last night after letting in a few to many goals to the last place Hurricanes.

For the records I believe Slovakia is going to win it all. I will be routing for USA though I do not READ MORE »

Crosby and Ovechkin are Headed Two Different Directions Together

Since the 2005/2006 season when Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin vaulted into the NHL there were two things you could count on more than Marion Gaborik getting injured. Crosby was a passer and was always going to hpp0162ave more assists than goals and Ovechkin was a shooter and was always going to have more goals than assists.

You can’t count on anything anymore. Since the beginning of the 2005 season the NHL has basically made Crosby and Ovechkin the faces of the league, rightfully so. Since then they are #1 and #2 in the league in points per game, Crosby at 1.35 and Ovechkin at 1.33. Crosby has thrown himself head first into the media playing the straight guy to his comedic sidekick Ovechkin, who has become quite a showman himself with his goal celebrations and the act he put on at the all-star game.

Being an Olympic year, I’m sure Crosby has been tossed more advertising money and offers than Ovechkin has considering companies probably do not wish to have an arch enemy of USA and Canadian hockey teams as there spokesperson. Perhaps this has given Alexander Ovechkin a little bit of time to re-think his product.   Ovechkin this year has more assists than he has goals for the first time since his first year in the league. His game has become much more rounded.  Was it the fact that when he missed games this season the Capitals were scoring more per game without him? Was it that he saw Crosby raise the Stanley Cup over his head? Maybe it was because of the ‘C’ on his shoulder.        READ MORE »

NHL investigating Washington Capitals ties to Steroids

A couple in Florida was arrested with an anabolic steroids stash worth a street value of $200,000 claimed to have sold them to Washington Capital players. Dick Patrick of the Washington Capitals has confirmed the NHL’s investigation “We welcome and will fully cooperate with the NHL’s investigation.”

Whether it is true or not has yet to be determined, but it is just a little weird that a man & woman from Florida would pick out the Washington Capitals out of all the other teams they could have said if they were making it up.

"All I can say is that we get tested two, three times a year and there's never been anybody that tested positive"

Donald Brashear: "All I can say is that we get tested two, three times a year and there's never been anybody that tested positive"

In other news, three Washington Capitals players just announced they were going to play in Russia, Viktor Kozlov, Sergei Federov and Donald Brashear. This brings to mind questions of the allegations when you consider the KHL had struggled to make ends meet last season and had a mandatory pay cut for player across the board.  Read “Everyone’s Going to the KHL” from the Washington Post. GameDay Poop: The Penguins vs Capitals – Epic Game 7

This is it! At 7pm tonight the Sidney Crosby versus Alexander Ovechkin match up the NHL has been blabbing about for 3 years comes to a head. Toss an Evgeni Malkin and Simyon Varlamov into the mix and you have an combination so explosive that if you have a heart condition, you may want to sit this one out.  Five of the first 6 games were decided by only one goal, and 3 of those in overtime.

NHL.com columnist John McGourty already has this series as one of the 6 all-time epic NHL playoff series going all the way back to 1942: click here to read the article: “Caps-Pens ready to join NHL’s other 7-game epics“

On top of all that, this is Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin’s first game seven in the NHL, it’s not just Crosby’s first in the NHL, but in any league he’s ever played in.  Alexander Ovechkin has already READ MORE »

Crosby Deserving of the Title Superstar

At the start of the Pens-Caps match-up, I wrote a piece about the superstars playing in this series.  As one might have expected, one man again has risen above all of the rest.  Sidney Crosby has been outstanding in this series.  The captain has been able to bring his A-game to the ice on most every shift.  He leads the league in goals and points and is proving that he is a superstar.  Players’ careers are ultimately judged by their playoff performances, and Sid has certainly proven that his best comes out at playoff time.  Crosby’s greatness extends beyond the game as well.  The way he handles the media, his willingness to be involved in the community,  the type of captain and teammate that he is.  It is never about him.  He goes out of his way to compliment and stand behind the play of his teammates.  Sid is the consummate professional.  He will hit you, he will outwork you along the boards, he will make a great pass, he will score a key goal, and he would NEVER deliberately intend to injure another player.  One of the other superstars in this series, Alexander Ovechkin has done just that, and in his gutless style refused to accept the responsibility for the dirty play.  READ MORE »
